Summary

Jacob Finch Bonner was once a promising young novelist with a respectably published first book。 Today, he's teaching in a third-rate MFA program and struggling to maintain what's left of his self-respect; he hasn't written--let alone published--anything decent in years。 When Evan Parker, his most arrogant student, announces he doesn't need Jake's help because the plot of his book in progress is a sure thing, Jake is prepared to dismiss the boast as typical amateur narcissism。 But then。。。 he hears the plot。

Jake returns to the downward trajectory of his own career and braces himself for the supernova publication of Evan Parker's first novel: but it never comes。 When he discovers that his former student has died, presumably without ever completing his book, Jake does what any self-respecting writer would do with a story like that--a story that absolutely needs to be told。

In a few short years, all of Evan Parker's predictions have come true, but Jake is the author enjoying the wave。 He is wealthy, famous, praised and read all over the world。 But at the height of his glorious new life, an e-mail arrives, the first salvo in a terrifying, anonymous campaign: You are a thief, it says。

As Jake struggles to understand his antagonist and hide the truth from his readers and his publishers, he begins to learn more about his late student, and what he discovers both amazes and terrifies him。 Who was Evan Parker, and how did he get the idea for his "sure thing" of a novel? What is the real story behind the plot, and who stole it from whom?

Hailed as breathtakingly suspenseful, Jean Hanff Korelitz's The Plot is a propulsive read about a story too good not to steal, and the writer who steals it。

DNF 5 pages in and was sick of the parenthesis。10 pages in and noticed a few parenthesis that never closed (editing job?)Sadly I paid for this book but just couldn’t keep going。

2 stars When you hate a book that everyone else loved。This book starts off very slow, but I was listening to the audiobook and was able to get to the more interesting parts fairly quickly。 But about 40% in I was already predicting most of what came true in the book and by the end I was downright mad。 Maybe I read too many mystery/thriller books? But this book for me was boring, predictable, and disappointing。 2 stars When you hate a book that everyone else loved。This book starts off very slow, but I was listening to the audiobook and was able to get to the more interesting parts fairly quickly。 But about 40% in I was already predicting most of what came true in the book and by the end I was downright mad。 Maybe I read too many mystery/thriller books? Interesting book。 A man (Jacob Finch Bonner) who has published one successful book has not had luck with any subsequent submissions。 He takes a job teaching writing of fiction at a summer institute for writers。 There he encounters a young man (one of his students) who tells Jake the bare bones of a novel he plans to write。 When Jake learns the student has died without ever writing the book, Jake fleshes out the story and publishes it as a work of his own。 That's where the trouble and the mystery Interesting book。 A man (Jacob Finch Bonner) who has published one successful book has not had luck with any subsequent submissions。 He takes a job teaching writing of fiction at a summer institute for writers。 There he encounters a young man (one of his students) who tells Jake the bare bones of a novel he plans to write。 When Jake learns the student has died without ever writing the book, Jake fleshes out the story and publishes it as a work of his own。 That's where the trouble and the mystery begin。 Be ready for the final plot twist。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 SPOILERS kindaThe book did not read easily in first few chapters。 It started to get a flow when the plot got going (pun intended) but then the twist is so obvious, the alleged plagiarism isn't really plagiarism and the stolen plot has a lot of holes in it。 Plus, I don't like the author saying that anyone could write a million dollar book that would be turned into a movie if they had this plot。 A writer could easily have a great idea/plot/twist but just not execute it in the writing。 This whole b SPOILERS kindaThe book did not read easily in first few chapters。 It started to get a flow when the plot got going (pun intended) but then the twist is so obvious, the alleged plagiarism isn't really plagiarism and the stolen plot has a lot of holes in it。 Plus, I don't like the author saying that anyone could write a million dollar book that would be turned into a movie if they had this plot。 A writer could easily have a great idea/plot/twist but just not execute it in the writing。 This whole book was a hot mess for me。 。。。more

4。5。 Only not 5 because I predicted the ending, but still really liked this book a lot!!

I was able to figure out the culprit and their motive immediately after the character was introduced。 I only finished it to see if it really was going to be that obvious。 And it was。

Heather

Predictable and drawn out。 Not the best Plot

Fantastic, loved it, didn’t see the final twist coming and it was a doozy。 Great read!!

Compelling, uncomfortable and water tight。 Maybe the end is guessable from perhaps around the quarter way in mark, but it’s still a fun and well written ride。

Thanks to NetGalley for my gifted copy of this book。 The Plot is a “ book with in a book” story about Jacob Finch Bonner, an author and now teacher at a 3rd rate MFA program。 Once awarded the “New and Noteworthy” author to watch by the NYTs, he has basically fallen into obscurity。 As a mentor of aspecting writers, he has heard everything he thinks he’ll ever hear and then some but nothing truly noteworthy and original until he meets Evan Parker。 Evan has a plot for a story that he claims will bl Thanks to NetGalley for my gifted copy of this book。 The Plot is a “ book with in a book” story about Jacob Finch Bonner, an author and now teacher at a 3rd rate MFA program。 Once awarded the “New and Noteworthy” author to watch by the NYTs, he has basically fallen into obscurity。 As a mentor of aspecting writers, he has heard everything he thinks he’ll ever hear and then some but nothing truly noteworthy and original until he meets Evan Parker。 Evan has a plot for a story that he claims will blow everyone away and will have Oprah, Spielberg, and Hollywood in general, come running。 During the first and only mentor session, Evan shares his “Plot” and Jacob is blown away。 Cut to several years later, wondering why he had never heard or seen this amazing book come to fruition, Jacob discovers that Evan has died and thinking that the plot was too good not to be written, writes his own version of the story he had only ever heard a brief summation of。 Wide acclaim and best seller status follows, including Oprah and movie rights, he starts getting emails accusing him of plagiarism。 As he tries to discover who is threatening him, the journey leads him from Vermont, to Georgia, and back to New York。 This book had a twist I didn’t, but maybe should have, seen coming。 Although it was slow in the middle, it held my interest and was a solid insight into the difficulty of being a writer。 。。。more

DNF This one is not for me, although most people enjoyed this book。 I will not be reviewing or rating because this is only my opinion and it would be unfair to rate。

Very slow start, but picked up and got interesting with a twist!

Great read with an interesting concept! I really enjoyed this, although, I did suss out the twist early on。 Still worth the ride, though!

Nickie

Decent read。 I figured it out too early which ruined it a bit but I still enjoyed it。

Sasha Gillespie

Great premise, I was immediately drawn in。 About half way through there is a tonal switch to more of a mystery, and some of the detective work felt a bit convenient。 Saw the ending coming but still enjoyed this。

I think I liked the philosophical questions asked by this book more than the story or characters。 I’m glad to say there was one twist I didn’t see coming, but I suspected the right person before I was a quarter of the way in。

I had to quit reading。 Too much writing for the sake of writing。 Get on with the story already!

Wow, this book was phenomenal。 A book within a book!!!

Great plot (to say the least) and a completely propulsive read from beginning to end。 I ended up thinking about this book alot。 Really good。

Rachel Goldberg

All around excellent read。 Super-sharp, meta about writing, writers, publishing, and a very good murder plot embedded within。 Lighter than Gone Girl but of that same ilk。 A couple of rough edges as things came to a climax, but overall I loved this。

Nancy

Not sure why the great reviews exactly。 Was fun reading both stories, but too many commas and parenthesis was distracting。 Did not need that many descriptions in one sentence and ending was not that surprising。 Had it figured out a 4th of the way through

Amy

Well written。 I’m sad to say I guessed “The Plot” of the The Plot very easily so that bummed me out, but otherwise a great book。

Melonie

3。5 rounded to 4。 I’m torn on how to rate this one because it was so painfully slow to get through to me and the ending was incredibly predictable BUT I enjoyed the story within the story aspect and think the author is incredibly creative for thinking of this storyline。
